A Birthday & Graduation Abroad
Have you ever been somewhere exotic to celebrate an accomplishment? I haven’t, but we’re changing that this December! Two concurrent milestones are happening for us. We are celebrating my husband’s 40th birthday and my graduation from Washington State University with a master’s degree in Strategic Communication.
To commemorate these milestones, we decided to book a trip to Cancun, Mexico. We did formative research to choose the location and hotel, including internet searches, review websites, recommendations from friends, etc. We ultimately picked Secrets The Vine, located in the hotel district on the Yucatan Peninsula.

How did we come to choose Secrets The Vine? For starters, Costco had a travel package to The Vine that included many extras that we couldn’t find booking the hotel any other way. For the investment we made into this trip, we are receiving a premium ocean view suite and private transportation to and from the airport, not to mention the all-inclusive benefits.
Secrets boasts “best-in-class service and gourmet restaurants and top-shelf drinks to endless day and nighttime activities” (The Vine Resort, n.d.). We couldn’t think of a more luxurious and relaxing way to celebrate.
Speaking of celebrating, our plans include taking one day of the vacation for each of us to be the focus of festivities. For my husband’s 40th birthday, we will celebrate on the second day of our trip. During the day we are going on a snorkeling excursion and then ending with a gourmet meal at one of the five-star restaurants at the resort. During the fourth day of our trip we are going to celebrate my graduation by going on a tequila tasting tour and then have another fine-dining experience at the resort.
One of the most anticipated elements of our trip is the inclusion of close friends. When we told our friends about the adventure, a few of them booked tickets to join us and celebrate together. We could not be more excited to share this trip with them. From excursions to dinner reservations, meeting at one of the three pools, or lounging on the soft sandy beaches, we will not be bored or lonely on this trip.

The beaches in Cancun are very different from the rocky beaches of the Pacific Northwest that we are used to. We expect to spend a lot of time on this trip in the sand and turquoise water. As an avid photographer I fully intend to bring my large DSLR camera to cement our experiences into beautiful images. Ultimately, we are looking to honor our accomplishments and indulge in our celebrations abroad.
“Secrets The Vine provides the ultimate backdrop for unparalleled pampering, romantic rendezvous and lasting memories” (The Vine Resort, n.d.).
