The final video draft project was challenging yet rewarding. Editing was most difficult because we had just begun to learn Adobe Premier Pro. Shooting footage was intricate, as many shots and angles were necessary to create the final videos.
I began by utilizing the logo I created for a fictitious gem and rock shop earlier in the semester. The Regal Rock Co. logo set the aesthetic and tone for the intro and exit. Once I had a preliminary idea of the storyline, I began crafting storyboards to time out the clips I wanted to shoot. I took these storyboards with me during the shoot and referenced them often. We shot videos in the sequences represented on the storyboards (see storyboards below).
A favorite part of this project was using my husband and daughter as actors. The storyline follows a sweet dad who buys his daughter gems, and they embrace creating a beautiful memory—facilitated by Regal Rock Co.
Finding a gem shop to shoot in was nearly impossible. I called every shop within a hundred-mile radius, and everyone firmly said no. I changed my storyboard to shoot the video outside an establishment that I could edit to look like a quaint shop. We chose a small bakery 15 minutes from our home with an enchanting window display. After we took the first shot near the bakery, my husband pointed across the street to a gem shop. This shop was not on any map; we simply stumbled upon it. We met the owner and explained the project, and she said yes immediately! She even participated in the shoot and encouraged me to take as much footage in her shop as necessary.
This gem shop was brilliant to shoot in. There was great lighting and explosions of color adorning every wall. This opportunity changed my storyboard, and I quickly modified it to utilize the indoor footage. I took note to shoot virtical and horizontal footage. Once I had more than enough footage, I uploaded the clips to Premier Pro and began to edit and organize each clip. This lengthy process taught me a lot about navigating Premier Pro.
Some of the tools I used most often involved using keyframes. This was daunting as I didn’t understand how to use them initially. I watched several YouTube videos and tutorials until I grasped the concepts and possibilities. It was beneficial, especially working with the vertical aspect of the Instagram video. I moved many of the camera shots around on the screen until I found the most fluid visual representation.
I also did a decent amount of recoloring for each individual clip. I was surprised by how easy it was to manipulate the color correction tools and add a bit of contrast and black point to make the clips pop. These functions within Premier Pro are strikingly similar to those in Photoshop. Also similar were the audio editing tools. I often used the razor tool to cut the music and bring different segments together. Prior knowledge of other Adobe’s Creative Suite programs was a huge benefit.
After adding music and transitions (I chose “fade to white” for transitions and “fade to black” to show a time-lapse), I exported the mp4 files to be uploaded to Vimeo. Once uploaded, I embedded the Vimeo videos here in my blog.
Overall, this project was gratifying. I intended the father-daughter story to evoke emotion from the audience and used a closing tagline, “Transforming Nature’s Wonders into Memories” to bring the story full-circle. This project was especially gratifying because of the involvement of my husband and daughter. Our whole family has watched the final clips countless times and everyone is delighted by them.
